Băneasa-Otopeni is Bucharest's northern corridor, running along the DN1 between the city centre and Henri Coandă Airport. The area mixes office parks and showrooms with residential districts and hotels, and Băneasa Shopping City remains its commercial landmark.

## History

Băneasa Airport dates back to 1912, when the Romanian Air League, led by Prince George Valentin Bibescu, set up a military flying school here, the founding act of Romania's first international airport and one of the oldest operational airports in the world. Renamed Aurel Vlaicu, it remained Bucharest's only airport until Otopeni opened in 1970, when the new terminal designed by Cezar Lăzărescu came into service with a capacity of 1.2 million passengers a year. The office area took shape much later: the Băneasa Business & Technology Park company was founded in 2005, and the park's two buildings were completed in the fourth quarter of 2007. In 2008, Băneasa Shopping City, built by Bouygues, opened, along with Unilever's headquarters in the office park, a tenant still active today.

## Amenities and access

The DN1, the Bucharest-Ploiești road, links the city centre to Henri Coandă Airport and runs through the corridor; Băneasa Business & Technology Park is about 5 minutes from Henri Coandă and roughly 1 minute from Aurel Vlaicu Airport.

- Public transport: bus lines 148, 301, 304 and 783, plus a future metro station planned for the park.
- Metro M6, under construction: links Gara de Nord to Henri Coandă, with completion estimated for 2028; the investment costs around €1.2 billion, financed from public and European funds, with a JICA contribution.
- Road: the northern exit towards the A3 motorway (Bucharest-Ploiești-Brașov).

The park has a restaurant, a bank branch, a medical clinic, showrooms and a post office. The American International School of Bucharest, a 10-hectare campus in Voluntari founded in 1962, has around 900 pupils. The Aurel Vlaicu building is a Category A historic monument.
