Cișmigiu borders two of Bucharest's key office zones, the CBD and Central area, where over 75,000 people work.

District 1 covers the northern and north-western part of Bucharest. With 264,185 residents, it is the least populous of the six administrative sectors, accounting for 12.5% of Bucharest's population of 2,108,049. At 68 km², however, it is by far the largest by land area — more than a quarter of the city's 236 km² — and holds 163,088 dwellings, or 15.1% of the capital's housing stock of 1,082,392.

## History

The name Cișmigiu comes from the public fountains built in 1779 by order of Alexandru Ipsilanti, one of them on the very site of today's garden. The land was marshy until 1830, when General Pavel Kiseleff ordered it drained and set aside for a public park. The project was entrusted in 1847 to the landscape architect Wilhelm Mayer, former director of the imperial gardens in Vienna, assisted by the gardener Franz Harer; the garden was fenced in 1852, with 100 oak benches, and opened in 1854 as Cișmigiu Gardens. In 1883, the lake hosted ice-skating competitions, and the grounds were extended by 15,000 sqm through the purchase of a plot from the Crețulescu family. Across the road, the Hotel Cismigiu building went up in 1912. In 1943 the Writers' Rotunda was established, with busts of Romanian authors. The park is a historic monument, code B-II-a-A-19655.

## Amenities and access

Izvor metro station (M1) serves Cișmigiu Gardens directly, and Universitate station (M1/M2/M3) is about 500 m from the park. Bulevardul Regina Elisabeta and Bulevardul Schitu Măgureanu, which border the garden, have trolleybus and bus lines. A new metro station, "Cișmigiu", is in the works, with five entrances (one at the Gheorghe Lazăr National College and two near the City Hall), linked to Izvor station by a 200 m underground passage.

- The Cervantes Institute, the Humanitas bookshop and the Gambrinus restaurant, in the Hotel Cismigiu building
