The Domenii area is located within close proximity to the Expoziției and CBD office hubs, where over 60,000 employees work.

District 1 covers the northern and north-western part of Bucharest. With 264,185 residents, it is the least populous of the six administrative sectors, accounting for 12.5% of Bucharest's population of 2,108,049. At 68 km², however, it is by far the largest by land area — more than a quarter of the city's 236 km² — and holds 163,088 dwellings, or 15.1% of the capital's housing stock of 1,082,392.

## History

The district was built on part of the Herăstrău Estate, land that Parliament had granted to the Royal House in 1884 to support the Crown financially. In 1916, seven hectares of the estate were parcelled out, and the first plots went to civil servants of the Ministry of Agriculture and Domains, which is where the name Parcul Domeniilor comes from. The definitive urban plan came in 1923, signed by Cincinat Sfințescu: villa plots on garden-city principles, plus a church, a school and a market hall. The Neo-Romanian villas, with porticoes and carved columns, appeared in the early 1930s; the Art Deco style followed towards the end of the decade. The Domenii Market Hall (Hala Pieței Domenii), by architect Nicu Georgescu, went up in 1933-1934. The land for Cașin Church was donated in 1935, but construction, interrupted by the war and by political events, was only finished in 1977. After 1989, owners restored the villas, and the area received protected built area status.

## Amenities and access

The district is organised around Parcul Cireșarilor and the Cireșarii Sports Base, both tied to the Părinți de Cireșari owners' association. Nearby are the Elias University Emergency Hospital, founded in 1936, the Domenii Market Hall and Cașin Church, on Bulevardul Mareșal, next to Arcul de Triumf. A few steps away, Parcul Regele Mihai I adds to the green space on offer.

- 1 Mai metro (M2), the closest station to Băneasa and Henri Coandă airports
- Aviatorilor metro (M1/M2), a 2-minute walk from Bulevardul Aviatorilor
- car access via Șoseaua Bucureștii Noi and Bulevardul Ion Mihalache towards the centre, or towards the DN1 and Otopeni
- bus and trolleybus lines 93, 203, 205, 282, 331, 331B, 335, 381, 642 and N113
