With access to the Pipera Nord, Dimitrie Pompeiu and Băneasa-Otopeni office zones, the wider Pipera area hosts more than 70,000 office workers.

District 1 covers the northern and north-western part of Bucharest. With 264,185 residents, it is the least populous of the six administrative sectors, accounting for 12.5% of Bucharest's population of 2,108,049. At 68 km², however, it is by far the largest by land area — more than a quarter of the city's 236 km² — and holds 163,088 dwellings, or 15.1% of the capital's housing stock of 1,082,392.

## History

In 1898, the Great Geographical Dictionary of Romania recorded Pipera (then also called Tătărani or Tătăranu) as a village of 122 inhabitants in the commune of Băneasa-Herăstrău, with a threshing mill and the church of Sfântul Ilie, built in the 18th century. In 1925 it appeared as part of the commune of Colentina-Fundeni, Pantelimon district. In the mid-20th century it lost its status as an independent locality and became part of the commune of Voluntari, which became a town in 2004. Until 1995 it remained an ordinary village; the price of land then climbed from around one dollar to 250 dollars per square metre, by 2005. The 2005-2008 property boom doubled the built-up area of the residential zone between 2002 and 2011, with over 1,400 houses built, and the former Pipera Airport, active in the interwar period, was turned into today's industrial and business centre.

## Amenities and access

The district has its own metro station, Pipera, the northern terminus of line M2. The main artery is Bulevardul Pipera (the former Pipera-Tunari road, overlaid on county road DJ200B); to the west, Strada Erou Iancu Nicolae leads towards Băneasa Zoo and the Police Academy. The A3 motorway physically separates the area from the centre of Voluntari, with the link to Bucharest made via a bridge built between 2007 and 2012. Henri Coandă Airport is 15 minutes away by car, and the centre of Bucharest around 20 minutes.
