District 1 covers the northern and north-western part of Bucharest. With 264,185 residents, it is the least populous of the six administrative sectors, accounting for 12.5% of Bucharest's population of 2,108,049. At 68 km², however, it is by far the largest by land area — more than a quarter of the city's 236 km² — and holds 163,088 dwellings, or 15.1% of the capital's housing stock of 1,082,392. ## History Primăverii took shape as a residential area in the 1930s and 1940s, part of Bucharest's interwar expansion northwards, along Șoseaua Kiseleff towards Herăstrău. The same period gave rise to the neighbouring villa districts: Cotroceni, Kiseleff, Nordului. Under the communist regime, the district was reserved for the homes of senior party officials. This is where Nicolae Ceaușescu's residence on Bulevardul Primăverii stood, known as the “Primăverii Palace”, today a museum open to visitors. After 1990, some of the properties were restituted or privatised, and the area consolidated its status as a villa district for ambassadors and wealthy owners, keeping the fabric of detached houses on generous plots inherited from the interwar period. ## Amenities and access Access is mainly by car, via Șoseaua Kiseleff and Șoseaua Nordului, both major arteries linking the area to Piața Victoriei and, further on, to Piața Presei Libere and DN1 towards the A3 and Transylvania. The nearest metro station is Aviatorilor (M2), on the northern edge of the district, next to Piața Aviatorilor. Henri Coandă Airport in Otopeni is roughly 15-18 km away, also on the DN1/A3 axis.
