West/North-West

Romania's West/North-West region (Timiș, Arad, Hunedoara, Caraș-Severin, Bihor, Satu Mare, Maramureș and Sălaj) is the most developed industrial and logistics hub outside the capital and a strong draw for nearshoring investment. Its profile is twofold: high value-added manufacturing and cross-border logistics oriented towards the markets of Central and Western Europe. It has a direct motorway link to Western Europe via the A1 and the Nădlac border crossing, and in the north through the Borș I and Borș II border crossings. The network is completed by the A3 motorway (the Biharia–Borș section), the A6 motorway project (Lugoj – Calafat) and the Arad – Oradea expressway, which links the region's two poles.

The region includes the Curtici rail hub, home to one of the largest and most modern road-rail intermodal terminals in Central and Eastern Europe.

Timișoara's Traian Vuia International Airport is one of the main air-cargo hubs, with a dedicated terminal, and Oradea Airport operates a cargo terminal of its own.

The area, at a glance

Romania's West and North-West (Timișoara, Arad and Oradea) is the logistics gateway to Central and Western Europe, on the A1 corridor and through the Nădlac and Borș border crossings. The area concentrates cross-border manufacturing and distribution, with an established industrial workforce and a diversified regional economy. Its proximity to the borders keeps it on the shortlist for regional operations.

History

The region's first industrial parks appeared in the late 1990s, as private initiatives in Timiș, Arad, Caraș-Severin and Hunedoara. In 2004, Timiș County Council built the Timișoara Industrial and Technological Park, 18.37 ha on Calea Torontalului (DN6), with EUR 3.7 million in PHARE funds.

The A1 motorway reached Timișoara in October 2012, with the opening of the 32 km Arad-Timișoara section. CTP opened here the first logistics park in the west of the country, CTPark Timișoara I, with 10,000 sqm let, followed in 2017 by CTPark Timișoara II, planned at 89,500 sqm, 6 km from Traian Vuia Airport and 1 km from the A1. By 2022, the Timișoara Industrial and Technological Park reached full occupancy, with 21 companies, 16 of them Romanian and 5 with German, Irish or Italian capital.

Amenities and access

The region's backbone is the A1 motorway, which links Nădlac to Arad, Timișoara, Lugoj, Deva, Sebeș and Sibiu, part of Pan-European Corridor IV; the Arad-Nădlac sections and the Arad ring road complete the link to the Hungarian border. The DN6 (Calea Torontalului) links Timișoara's industrial park to the Cenad-Kiszombor border crossing, about 75 km away.

Traian Vuia International Airport has a 1,250 sqm cargo terminal, with 24/7 ramp handling, and south of the airport a 65 ha intermodal logistics centre worth over EUR 300 million is being prepared. VGP Park Arad sits next to the A1, about 50 km from the Hungarian border.
