The area, at a glance

Central Bucharest combines modern office buildings with converted historic buildings, between Piața Unirii, Universitate and Calea Victoriei. The area is favoured by law firms, studios and companies that value proximity to institutions. Dense public transport is the main practical advantage.

History

The Old Town (Lipscani) is bounded roughly by Calea Victoriei to the west, Bulevardul Brătianu to the east, Splaiul Independenței to the south and Bulevardul Regina Elisabeta to the north. Calea Victoriei has borne this name since 1878, the year it was renamed to celebrate Romania's victory in the 1877-1878 War of Independence. Along its route, the CEC Palace and the Postal Palace, today the National Museum of Romanian History, were built in the early 20th century. The CEC Palace was built in 1900, in French Baroque style, with a central dome on a metal-and-glass structure, on the site of a 16th-century monastery demolished in 1875. Near Piața Universității, on Strada Ion Câmpineanu, the Union International Center 1 building dates from the 1930s and was renovated between 1994 and 1997, keeping the historic structure under an office use.

Amenities and access

The central area offers pedestrian access to green spaces and major cultural institutions:

  • Cișmigiu Park, the largest historic park in central Bucharest, west of Calea Victoriei
  • The National Museum of Romanian History, in the former Postal Palace
  • The Central University Library, in the building of the former Palace of the Carol I Cultural Foundation
  • The Romanian Academy, with its historic seat also on Calea Victoriei
  • The Old Town (Lipscani), a pedestrian area with restaurants and cafés

The connection to the rest of the city runs through Universitate metro station (lines M1, M2, M3) and, for the Timpuri Noi Square area, through Timpuri Noi metro station, with links of about 30 minutes to the outlying districts on the M1 and M3 lines. By road, Calea Victoriei and Splaiul Independenței/Splaiul Unirii form the main arteries that cross and bound the area.
