The Aviației area benefits from an advantageous location, with easy access to the main office hubs in northern Bucharest (Floreasca-Barbu Văcărescu, Dimitrie Pompeiu, Băneasa-Otopeni and Expoziției), areas that together host more than 140,000 employees.

District 1 covers the northern and north-western part of Bucharest. With 264,185 residents, it is the least populous of the six administrative sectors, accounting for 12.5% of Bucharest's population of 2,108,049. At 68 km², however, it is by far the largest by land area — more than a quarter of the city's 236 km² — and holds 163,088 dwellings, or 15.1% of the capital's housing stock of 1,082,392.

Aviației is one of the most sought-after residential districts in northern Bucharest: quiet streets, close to Herăstrău and the Barbu Văcărescu office hubs. The mix of new boutique apartment blocks and established buildings draws families and professionals alike. Metro access rounds out the area's profile.

History

Before the 1980s, the area south of Băneasa Airport consisted mostly of houses with yards, with a quiet, peripheral feel. In the 1980s, the Ceaușescu regime built housing here for aviation, military and police personnel, which is where the district's name comes from. Unlike the standard 10-storey blocks built in other districts in the same period, the original buildings here stayed at 3-4 storeys, which preserved a lower density and a different character from areas such as Drumul Taberei. Located in Sector 1, bordered to the north by Băneasa, the district began to change in 2008, when construction of Floreasca City Center started. After the 2008-2009 crisis came a wave of new offices, the arrival of the Promenada mall, hotels, private schools and medical facilities.

Amenities and access

The Aurel Vlaicu metro station (M2) is in the district, at the junction of Șoseaua Pipera and Calea Floreasca. Tram 5 passes through Pasajul Băneasa, and buses 135, 243, 301, 330, 605, 112, 343, 459 and the N119 night bus complete the network. Băneasa Airport is about 3.5 km away, 45 minutes on foot. The district is structured by Șoseaua Pipera, Strada Nicolae Caranfil, Calea Floreasca and Strada Căpitan Aviator Alexandru Șerbănescu.
